Kent Enviropower’s Allington Quarry Integrated Waste Management Facility is now in commercial operation, and both the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) and the Energy from Waste (EfW) Facility are processing waste. The MRF separates materials that have been sent for recycling by Kent households. In April, the MRF sent 1,379 tonnes of materials to be reprocessed. In May, the MRF sent 1,348 tonnes to be reprocessed. Facility Update

The MRF can process up to 65,000 tonnes per year of sorted materials for recycling and the EfW can process up to 500,000 tonnes per year of non-hazardous waste from households and businesses in and around Kent. Kent Enviropower’s Allington Quarry Integrated Waste Management Facility is now in commercial operation, and both the Materials Recycling Facility and the Energy from Waste Facility are currently processing waste. The turbine that generates energy for the national grid is being commissioned following repairs, and it is anticipated that the facility will be exporting energy to the national grid again from February. When operating at full capacity, the facility can export up to 34 megawatts to the national grid, which is enough to supply the needs of a town almost one-and-a-half times the size of Maidstone. Following the successful completion of testing, commissioning and inspections, Kent Enviropower took over the Allington Quarry Waste Management Facility from contractors Lentjes on Christmas Eve. Following the successful completion of the testing and commissioning phase designed to ensure that the facility is working safely and efficiently before it commences full operations, contractor Lentjes has handed over the Allington Quarry Waste Management Facility to Kent Enviropower. The steam blows that we have been undertaking since 10th December to clean the pipe work connecting the boilers that we use to generate electricity for the national grid were completed yesterday. Noise from the process was controlled by a silencer and there was some visible steam from the facility over this period. We have begun accepting deliveries of waste in preparation for the restart of the facility, which is due next week. The facility is now undergoing final checks before it can be handed over by contractors Lentjes to begin commercial operations. Facility Update

The facility is currently undergoing final checks before it can be handed over by contractors Lentjes to Kent Enviropower to begin commercial operations. Steam blows to clean the pipe work connecting the boilers that we use to generate electricity for the national grid began on Wednesday 10th December. Noise from the process has been controlled by a silencer and there has been some visible steam from the facility over this period. Kent Enviropower endeavours to undertake steam blows during normal office working hours. Unfortunately, it is likely to be necessary to undertake steam blows this weekend, Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th December in order to meet the timetable for restarting the facility. There will up to four steam blows over the weekend between 8.30am and 6pm, each lasting around ten minutes. As before, noise will be controlled by a silencer and there may be some visible steam from the facility. We apologise for any inconvenience or disturbance this may cause. Facility Update

Upon completion of the tests the facility will be shut down for a mechanical inspection and, if the facility is found to meet Kent Enviropower’s stringent safety, environmental and performance criteria, it will be handed over by contractors Lentjes to begin commercial operations. Procedures to start all three lines have begun and the facility is expected to start burning waste later today. The facility is also accepting deliveries of waste. The maintenance works to the Energy from Waste facility have successfully been completed, and the procedures to restart the plant have begun. The rubbish which has been stored on site during the shutdown will be shredded, and used to restart the boilers. Once this process has been completed, the facility will accept deliveries of waste. The facility will then undergo performance tests. These tests are a normal part of the commissioning process, and are designed to ensure that the facility is operating efficiently and effectively before Ken Enviropower takes it over, and begins commercial operation. The facility remains temporarily closed for maintenance work to the linings of the furnaces and is due to re-start in September when it will undergo further performance tests. The tests are part of the process designed to ensure that the facility is operating efficiently before it begins full commercial operations. The Environment Agency has agreed that the waste left over from the performance test in July can remain on site in purpose built storage areas until the facility re-starts when it can be burnt. Kent Enviropower will continue to implement comprehensive daily fly and odour control measures during this period to ensure minimal impact to the local community and is liaising closely with the Environment Agency Facility Update

The facility was shut down in late July for a routine inspection following the successful completion of the latest round of performance tests. The tests and the inspection are part of a process designed to ensure that the facility is operating efficiently before it begins full commercial operations. The inspection identified the need for maintenance to the linings of the furnaces and the facility has remained closed to enable this work to take place. Power to the facility has now been fully restored following a technical fault with an electrical transformer, which occurred last week. Some waste was left over from the performance test and this is being held on site in sealed storage areas to prevent odours. Kent Enviropower is also implementing daily fly control measures to minimise impact to the local community. Facility Update

Routine testing of the safety valves of the boilers at the Allington Waste Management Facility will take place on 22nd/23rd of July. The test will result in the release of steam and some, limited noise for short periods. The test is a statutory safety requirement for all boilers and is an important step in the lead up to the full operation of the facility. The Allington facility is now accepting and burning rubbish. The facility has just undergone a planned and routine inspection as part of the testing and commissioning phase ahead of being handed over from contractors Lentjes to KentEnviropower. Another planned closure for mechanical inspection is scheduled to take place in approximately 25 days along with a steam blowout. The blow through entails steam being generated and blown through pipe work associated with the combustion chambers to clean them so that the steam turbine, which will be used to generate electricity, will work properly. This procedure will take place during office hours and as noise from this procedure is always controlled by a silencer, there will be no impact on our neighbours. A specific date is yet to be scheduled and further updates will be made here on the website

The Allington Quarry Waste Management FacilityKent Enviropower Limited (a part of the Waste Recycling Group) is developing an integrated waste management facility at Allington Quarry on the outskirts of Maidstone.
The facility takes non-hazardous waste from households and businesses in Kent and the surrounding area for recycling and energy recovery. Materials separated by householders will be recycled, with the remainder being used to generate electricity to power the facility and for the local supply network. Development of the site, a former quarry, includes a nature conservation area. Throughout this web site we refer to 'waste'. All waste managed at the site is non-hazardous and comes from homes and businesses in Kent and the surrounding area.
